This specially produced video starts in the small fishing village of Saint Dogmaels
and follows the coast-
Pembrokeshire is a bird watcher's paradise and this guide takes you high above spectacular
cliffs that are crammed with nesting birds. The area boasts several nature reserves
and included in the guide is a visit to the internationally renowned seabird colony
of Skomer Island. Weather permitting, the Island is open to the public from Easter
to October with sailings from Martins Haven on Tuesday -
Skomer is managed by the Wildlife Trust West Wales and the island is home to colonies
of Guillemots, Fulmars, Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Puffins. The Island also boasts
about 160,000 breeding pairs of Manx Shearwater. Unfortunately the birds live in
underground burrows during the night or stay far out to sea in the daytime. Unless
you stay overnight in one of the Trust's chalets you will not get to see them!
Skomer
is a blaze of colour in summer months. During April and May the centre of the Island
is covered in bluebells that give way to large swathes of pink Sea Campion in June
and July. Later in the year purple heather stands out resplendent against the golden
bracken.
Although Skomer is off the Coast Path, it is a really special place and every
effort should be made to visit the Island.
